How to create a website that makes money

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

You never get a second chance at first impressions.  Not only does this truth apply when developing personal relationships, it also applies when you try to create a website that makes money. As I have traversed the World Wide Web, I have found sites that have been thoroughly impressive and others not so much. You would be surprised at the lack of understanding of the first impression principle.

In the age of information it is important to make your information as accessible as possible.  If a customer cannot find what they are looking for on your site they are likely to leave and find it on your competitor’s.

People go to the internet for two things:

1. Find information on a product or service they intend to purchase
2. Make a purchase

There is no doubt the importance of web design as a tool for marketing goods and services. Upon visiting a website, the mind of the customer is made whether they will stay or go as soon as your website downloads. Your ability to keep them perusing your page is in based on a design that creates compelling exchange.

Regardless of what anyone says all humans look on the outside rather than the inside. It is our human nature to make judgments based on looks rather than substance during first encounters. If the cover of your book(your website) is not appealing then you will find that what you created was not a website that makes money.

If the design of your website placed emphasis on deep and rich content yet losses a customer based on first impressions then you have wasted your time. When your website is perceived as confusing and uninteresting then your product or service will be perceived in the same manner.

A great example of this comes from Robert Cialdini’s book, Influence - Science and Practice, a woman owned an Indian Jewelry store in Arizona who recently purchased an allotment of turquoise jewelry.

The store owner had a hard time selling any pieces of this particular jewelry. She tried many sales tricks such as shifting their location to a central spot in the store, no luck. She had her sales clerks push the jewelry hard upon customers–with no success. One day the owner went on a buying trip but prior to leaving she left a note for her head saleswoman stating, “Everything in this display case, price x 1/2,” in hopes of getting rid of the offensive jewelry, even at a loss. The store owners handwriting must have been horrific because the saleswoman mistook “1/2″ to be “2″, and the entire allotment was sold for twice the original price!

The jewelry only sold because a higher price led to a perceived higher value. You see, “Perception is the key to the mind”.

7 Powerful Reasons Why You Need Internet Marketing

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

If you have not made the decision to step into internet marketing then something is wrong.  Here are a few reason that you should consider to help you make a move.  If these points don’t push you over the edge of indecision then nothing will.

Internet marketing is plug and play: Any type of print advertising has to be set up and scheduled; flyers and newspapers may take several days and an ad in your local phone book may not come out until many months down the road.

Internet marketing gives you control: You’ve decided to offer your customers a special discount: you can immediately add a coupon and adjust what you need to right on your website rather than having to wait for someone at the print shop or newspaper to get around to it.

Internet Marketing is not just cost effective…it is cheaper: you get more “bang for your buck” online. Rather than having to pay higher prices for print work and distribution costs, you can use the money you save on advertising to add to your merchandise. If you are looking to go “Green” (An added bonus is that you’ll also help environmentally because you’re using little, if any, natural resources to promote your business! )

Internet marketing is interactive: Instead of just seeing a flat, two dimensional image, you can catch your customer’s eye with all sorts of “bells and whistles”! Audio and visual enhancements invite your customers to involve themselves to a much greater extent than just looking at a newspaper ad or flyer. There is an added benefit to advertising online and that is you can also include additional information as part of your customer testimonials and Frequently Asked Questions ( or FAQs ).

Internet marketing is easily tracked: If you do any sort of print advertising, the only tangible means of tracking how effective your campaign is, or at least part of it, is to use coupons that the customers have to redeem. Even then, it’s difficult to know exactly who is responding to any of your advertising.

Internet Marketing can easily be measured and broken down into very specific results. Aside from tracking individual sales, there are ways of tracking which web pages have been seen. This is a great tool to use to help you refine your advertising and be much more responsive to your customers.

Internet marketing receives instant feedback: You can immediately change your sales process, product and promotion by asking your customers for feedback right on your site.  If you know exactly what your customers want, your sales will go through the roof.

Internet marketing works: If it didn’t, it wouldn’t be enticing national advertisers to continue to increase their online advertising budgets by twenty-five percent each year!

You have seen just a few of the benefits of online marketing and how it can establish or improve you current business.

5 Tips for Starting Your Internet Home Business

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

You’ve read all of these great things about starting an internet home business and how it will open up the door to financial freedom for us all.

Before you actually start trying everything you see online, it is important for you to do your due diligence regarding internet marketing.

When entering into the world of internet home business, you need to remember that you own a real business.

With a business comes several issues to consider:

Finding Your Niche – Anyone internet for anytime soon realizes the importance of establishing a niche. I define a niche as a distinct segment of a market.

Let me give you an example: A person searches for weight loss on Google and it comes up with 75,200,000 references available. To help narrow down their search to his exact need he could type into the search engine the word “fat burning exercises” (34,100 references), “weight loss exercise programs”, or “weight loss supplements”… For a person to find exactly what he wants he needs to type in his desire outcome.

So to find or develop a niche you need to target your audiences desired outcome as close as possible to the product or service that you offer.

Those just starting an internet home business will find it important to start in a niche that they find most interesting. Check out your bookshelf or even your magazine subscriptions and you will zero in on what interest to you.

Budget – At all cost try not to go broke just to get rich quick. Make sure to keep track of all your expense and how much you earn each month. Before you begin any business make sure that you can survive financially for a period of 6 to18 months. Most businesses take about 18 months to truly get off the ground and begin returning a profit from their investment of time and money.

Developing your website(s) – When it comes to developing your website(s) for your business you have several different options.

You can develop your own – I personally recommend this option because I believe that it gives you the most freedom and movement needed in your internet home business.

Hire a webmaster – By searching websites like Elance.com, you can hire a webmaster for little out of pocket expense.

Marketing Plan – How would you like to approach your marketing? With so many choices you can’t go wrong? My recommendation is to pick one and get really good at it.

The following list is by no means an exhaustive:

Affiliate Marketer – Create a product that can be sold to others and allow them to also market the product giving them a commission for sells made.

Viral Marketing – You can create a product such as an ebook give it away to others to freely distribute. This particular ebook should have links driving traffic back to your website allowing for more opportunities to sell your product.

Membership Site – If you have a passion for a particular topic you can open this site to people who are also interested in this particular topic as well. Imagine charging $10 and up per month for information or services that members can’t get any where else.
